About Us

The village of West Dereham is located about 4 miles east of Downham Market, just off the A134 between Crimplesham and Wereham.  It covers an area of 5.22 square miles (13.51 km2). West Dereham has a population of approximately 450 in 175 households.  The village is not to be confused with the mid-Norfolk town of Dereham (sometimes called East Dereham) which lies about 25 miles (40km) to the east.

Lying on the edge of the Fens to the south, St Andrew’s Church is situated on higher ground to the north of the village and is one of 124 existing round tower churches in Norfolk.  The church is a Grade 1 listed building and in recent years has received grants from English Heritage for repairs to the tower and north windows.

In recent years the village has recently been able to extend and renovate the Village Hall.  This provides an important social centre in a village which has lost five public houses, two chapels and two shops over the years as well as its village school.  The Village Hall is also the base for the popular ‘White Hart’ bar which is run solely by volunteers.

West Dereham Parish Council achieved Quality Status in June 2012, and is committed to making improvements within the village for its parishioners.  For the purposes of local government, West Dereham falls within the Borough of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk.
